Description

Starting from South Colton this north-south trail is an essential part of the multi-use trail network and a vital link to connect to Lewis County trails. The trail is 38 miles one way with 26 miles on private and state easement lands with a variety of scenic wooded trails and logging roads, 7 miles on rural town roads and 4 miles on county roads. Stop for lunch along the way at a scenic view such as Pleasant Lake or visit South Colton-Rideau’s Mahogany Ridge for food, Boyce’s General Store for food and gas, and Red Pine Pub for food. In the town of Russell, visit Jocko’s II Bar & Grill (Degrasse), Plum Brooke Café, or GT’s Restaurant.

The trail starts at trailhead parking on Cold Brooke Drive in South Colton then winds through the Raquette Valley Fish and Game Private Parcel with scenic views along Little Cold Brook Creek. It connects through a private parcel with views of beautiful wetlands and forest then goes on to Molpus NYSDEC (Rayonier Conservation Easement)  for 2.5 miles where it crosses a creek and large hill. It then connects to Little John Road through Long Pond Conservation Easement, to Gulf Brook Road, and to New Grasse River Long Pond Connector. It then crosses the Molpus Grass River Conservation Easement using North Pleasant Lake Road to Troopers Shed to East West Haul Road. It crosses Carpenter Brook Camp for 10.5 miles and then the Tooley Pond Conservation Easement on Allan Pond Connector before continuing southeast onto Tooley Pond Road. On Tooley Pond Road there are many beautiful waterfalls to stop and view (See the County Chamber waterfalls brochure).

Hello Kim,
Thank you for your recommendation. We will look at making an easier filter for surfaces.
At this time, you can click on discover trails and filter a bit. For example, you can click to filter by hike or walk and then type gravel in the search box.

Each trail has use (hike, bike, etc) and surface identified, so it is possible at this time, but we can look at adding a surface filter on that search area.

Please let us know if there is something specific you are looking for and we can help give a few recommendations. Note that there is a Great 8 Challenge called the Riverside Run, which is great for trail running. There is also a loop challenge on the badges page for road cycling.

I hope this helps a bit.
Thank you again for your feedback.

Happy Trails

It would be great to have a legend with a trail map that shows surface types for road bikers and runners.
