Take a short walk from the trailhead off NY-56 to the top of Moody Falls on the Raquette River. The trail is flanked by wild flowers, and during springtime is popular with dragonflies and butterflies. The view from the put in above the falls is one of pure wilderness, and in the distance the highest point in St. Lawrence County, Mt. Matumbla, is visible. The water above the falls is calm and would provide an excellent setting for a short paddle between a series of islands. There is another set of rapids roughly 1 mile upstream. Below the falls there is calm water for approximately 0.5 miles until you reach Jamestown Falls.
